The year is 2033, and humanity's first crewed mission to Mars is about to become a reality ! Set both in the future and in the present day, the global miniseries event MARS blends feature film-caliber scripted elements set in the future with documentary vérité interviews with today´s best and brightest minds in modern science and innovation, illuminating how research and development is creating the space technology that will enable our first attempt at a mission to Mars.

Space scientists have learned a lot about Mars over the past half-century, by sending unmanned robotic spacecraft to orbit the planet and by landing both stationary probes and rovers onto its surface. There are indications that the Martian atmosphere, which is largely composed of carbon dioxide, may have been much thicker than it is today. On Earth, much of our atmosphere´s methane comes from living organisms, such as cows and other grazing animals who produce it as a byproduct of digestion and then belch it into the air. But Mars doesn´t appear to support any animal life, so it must have another source.

Mars is the only planet in the solar system (besides Earth, that is) that once had liquid water. Robotic exploration of Mars has led to discoveries (such as perfectly rounded pebbles that most likely were formed by rushing water, and fine-grained sediments similar to those at the bottom of lakes on Earth) that indicate that it once may have had ancient oceans and rivers.... As astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson explained in a 2014 interview, the evidence that Mars once had water suggests that it also once had life.

On the premiere episode of MARS (National Geogeaphic Channel), the Daedalus lands on Mars, but not without complications, and the six crew members take humanity's first steps on another planet. Mysteries of the Martian Atmosphere : Water on Mars, Was There Ever Life on Mars,.... Though generations of science fiction writers have imagined a Mars inhabited with intelligent beings and we´ve also discovered that some organisms have evolved to live in extreme conditions on Earth....
