THE STORY
"The Kid Who Would Be King" is a Children´s Film set in a Contemporary Britain. The Miseries its 12-year-old Hero Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) endures Every Day at Dungate Academy are Typical of what Everybody Else seems to be experiencing too. He discovers an Ancient Blade on a Local Construction Site, realises it´s Excalibur, and ends up embarking on a Quest with his Best Friend Bedders (Dean Chaumoo) and the Bullies who have been making his Life Hell (Rhianna Dorris as Kaye & Tom Taylor as Lance), the Quartet slowly transforming into Four Pint-Sized Knights. Elsewhere, the Wicked Sorceress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) awakens Underground and sends her Minions after Excalibur. The Next Day, a Teenager appears from inside Stonehenge and presents himself at Alex's School as a New Student. The Boy reveals himself to Alex as the Wizard Merlin, capable of Aging Backwards, but is also able to shift between his Arthurian Counterpart...

OUR REVIEW
This Movie is Sentimental in all the Right Places, and Impossible to dislike. Writer-Director Joe Cornish gives the Legend of King Arthur and the Round Table a New Spin. Alex is the One who pulls the Sword from the Stone after finding the Gleaming Blade in a Building Site... Polite, Anglo, and thoroughly Unexceptional, Alex comes across as an Average Student in most Respects, proving that Chivalry is not dead. Alex always intervenes to help out his Friend, Bedders (Dean Chaumoo), who is teased and tormented by the Other Kids in the Playground. As a Result, he gets beaten up himself and is in Constant Trouble with the Teachers.

The Movie plays as a Kind of Tiddly Thrones, a Gateway Drug for Kids into Harder Fantasy, though the CGI is unlikely to scare even Little Ones... In the Film´s Best Gag Merlin frets : where in London can he find Beaver Urine and Beetle Blood for a Potion ? In the Ingredients of a Chicken-Shop Takeaway of course...
