Citizenfour has won the Oscar for the best documentary, for its Director Laura Poitras, editor Mathild Nonnefoy and producer Dirk Wilutzky. Laura Poitras said 'The disclosures of Edward Snowden don't only expose a threat to our privacy but to our democracy itself. When the decisions that rule us are taken in secret we lose the power to control and govern ourselves.'

Edward Snowden, in response to the Oscar wrote 'when Laura Poitras asked me if she could film our encounters, I was extremely reluctant. I'm grateful that I allowed her to persuade me. The result is a brave and brilliant film that deserves the honour and recognition it has received. My hope is that this award will encourage more people to see the film and be inspired by its message that ordinary citizens, working together, can change the world.'

Laura poitras had already been working about surveillance when Edward Snowden first contacted her under the codename Citizenfour. Under communication concealed by encrypted message, they began to discuss certain issues that Edward Snowden felt the world should know. In the documentary, we have a deep insight into what occured and why Edward Snowden felt this was the time to come out with the information. The film raises justifiable questions regarding our freedom and individual personal privacy. You can understand people frustration that the majority of media are obsessed with glorifying celebrity to distract us. Many hide essential information behind smoke and forget to question the reality of the world.

People censor themselves because they are worried about what they might say. Politics shouldn't be a secret window in which only one side can see the certainty of a situation, we should have a say. This last documentary from Laura Poitras concludes a trilogy of documentaries she made that show the effect of 9/11 on America and the world. The first 'My Country' is about life in Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003. The second 'The Oath' is about inmates at the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. All documentaries providing a powerful perspective on U.S. Policy in the past fourteen years.
