Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman led a Las Vegas-style celebration at Fremont Street Experience on Thursday, December 17, to fete the accomplishments of baseball superstars, Kris Bryant and Bryce Harper, both natives of the city. The two players grew up playing against and with each other, and now continue to face off as friendly rivals representing Las Vegas in the Major Leagues.
Mayor Goodman, joined by former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman and his showgirl attendants, presented the two 2015 all-stars with Keys to the City of Las Vegas in recognition of their outstanding 2015 seasons and their accomplishments as homegrown athletes with amazing starts to their young careers. More than 1,000 fans, tourists and residents alike, attended the event in honor of the two future Hall of Famers.
Bryce Harper, an outfielder with the Washington Nationals, was named the National League MVP, after posting a season with 42 home runs, a .330 batting average, 99 runs batted in, 118 runs scored and six stolen bases. He played high school baseball at Las Vegas High School. In 2010 while attending the College of Southern Nevada, He led the baseball team to the junior College World Series. He also won the Golden Spikes Award as the top collegiate player in the nation, and won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2012.
Kris Bryant, a third-baseman with the Chicago Cubs, was named the National League Rookie of the Year, tallying 26 home runs, a .275 average, 99 runs batted in, 87 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. He attended Bonanza High School, and while playing at the University of San Diego, he was a first-team All-American and won the Golden Spikes Award as the top collegiate player in the nation.
