THE STORY :
Following an argument with her fiancé Ben, Michelle ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead) leaves New Orleans and drives through rural Louisiana. Late at night, she turns on the radio only to hear that there were continuous blackouts in major cities. Distracted by a call from Ben, Michelle gets into an accident and is rendered unconscious. She wakes up in a room chained to a wall, and is approached by a man named Howard (John Goodman), who explains that an unknown attack has taken place and that he brought her to his bunker after finding her on the side of the road. Michelle meets Emmett (John Gallagher, Jr.), another survivor who witnessed the attack and fled to Howard's bunker.

As time passes, the trio begins adapting to living underground. Later, realizing that Howard is dangerous, Michelle and Emmett begin to plan an escape and fashion a biohazard suit, but Howard discovers what they are doing...
OUR REVIEW :
All three cast members play their roles perfectly, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead doing a terrific job of leading the audience through the increasingly outlandish revelations of the plot and Goodman walking a thin line between threat and pathos. Finally, with John Gallagher Jr´s Emmett, whose status is initially uncertain, but who believes Howard´s tales of an apocalypse. A great psychological thriller directed by Dan Trachtenberg.

The filmmmaker keeps us guessing about what´s happening above ground but the real drama lies in the interpersonal chamber-piece dynamics of these increasingly characters. It´s a taut Hitchcockian thriller that starts off with a juicy setup : after a car accident, a young woman wakes up in an underground bunker with a man who tells her that the world outside is no longer safe.
